Retention Scheme
The retention scheme is where a registration mark is removed from a vehicle and placed onto a certificate of entitlement. The certificate then allows the owner to transfer the registration to another vehicle at their convenience, meaning they are able to sell the donor vehicle and retain the registration.
Only registrations registered in Great Britain are eligible for this scheme. Registrations from Northern Ireland cannot be put onto retention directly. They must first be registered in England, which will incur further costs.
All registrations supplied by CMUK will come retained on a Certificate of Entitlement. All you have to do is visit your DVLA Local Office and transfer the registration onto your vehicle.
Mis-representation of Letters/Numbers on a Registration plate
It is recognised that some Letters/Numbers similar to letters or words, i.e. 8 = B, 5 = S, 17 = N, etc, however it is completely illegal to mis-represent the characters in any way.
If stopped by a Police Officer, you could be liable for a fine of up to £1000 or requested to change your registration plates for legal ones!
Cherished Marks UK do not advocate the manipulation or mis-representation of a registration number on your registration plate - if you chose to do this it is entirely your own responsibility
What are the Postage Costs?
CMUK DO NOT charge you for postage costs for your Certificate of Entitlement – all costs are included in the price we quote.
How long will I have to wait?
Transfer times vary depending on the time of year and other factors – i.e. Christmas is a particularly busy time for the purchase of registrations as gifts.
Registrations that are held on Retention – meaning the only action required is to add your name to the Certificate of Entitlement - usually take between 3 to 10 working days.
The principle is that the quicker you pay, the quicker the transfer will take!!
How much do I have to pay to transfer the registration to my vehicle?
YOU PAY NOTHING MORE when purchasing from CHERISHED MARKS UK©
Currently the charge to add your name to the Certificate of Entitlement is £25 (as set and payable to the DVLA, Swansea), however when purchasing through CMUK:
WE PAY THIS FEE on your behalf.
If the registration is from stock, or is currently held on a donor vehicle, we will inform you of this at the time of your quote and inform you of any other charges/costs involved, but in all cases we include any additional charges in the BUY IT NOW PRICE as far as possible.
Do you supply the actual acrylic number plates to put on my vehicle?
CMUK DO NOT provide you with the actual plates to put on your vehicle, this action needs to be taken by you upon receipt of your Certificate of Entitlement.
There are many companies who will make the plates to your specification, located on the High Street and on the Internet.
Prices range from £15 per pair upwards
(Unfortunately CMUK do not offer a recommendation service for the number plate manufacturers, so please don’t ask us to recommend!)
The registration is a gift for someone, and I don’t want him or her to find out about it!
Upon purchase of your registration, BE SURE to let us know it is a gift and we will send the documents for your attention.
We always use plain envelopes to send out documentation, and if necessary will send the documents to an alternative address for you, if you supply one, so that the lucky person doesn’t find out until you decide to tell them!
Adding the nominee name to the Certificate
When making your purchase, you will be asked for the nominee name that will appear on the Certificate of Entitlement.
The nominee name is the name of the person who the Registration is for, and this name MUST match the name as it appears on the Vehicle’s V5 to which the Registration will be transferred to.
For example, if the vehicle V5 is registered in the name of:
MRS SUSAN JOHNSON
the nominee name you supply to us must read exactly the same as this.
If the V5 reads:
MRS S JOHNSON
Again you should supply this information.
(Please Note: CMUK cannot be held responsible for any purchaser incurring additional fees payable to the DVLA if the name on the Certificate of Entitlement DOES NOT MATCH the V5 name.
It is your responsibility to ensure you supply the correct name)
Ownership of Registrations
Whilst CMUK have a large number of stock registrations, Registrations come from individuals who are looking to transfer the marks from their own vehicles, and un-issued Government stock.
I want a Registration number – what do I do?
Easy – simply send us an email via our CONTACT US PAGE and we will assist you in searching for the registration of your choice.
Be sure to send any other questions or enquiries via this page regarding your purchase or transfer.
Is it right that I can’t make my car look younger than it actually is?
Yes – absolutely correct. You can't use a mark to make a vehicle look newer than it is, meaning you cannot put a “Y” prefix plate onto a vehicle registered before 2001, i.e. you cannot transfer this plate onto a “V” registration car, or any car registered before V.
What is a prefix registration?
Prefix registrations contain the year identifier at the beginning of a registration, i.e. C 123 MUK – in this example “C” is the “prefix”
What is a suffix registration?
Suffix registrations contain the year identifier at the end of a registration, i.e. CMU 123 K– in this example “K” is the “suffix”
What is a current style registration?
Current style registrations consist of two letters, a two-figure age identifier and finally three letters, i.e. CM 02 UKS
Are there any special rules for motorcycles / mopeds?
No - Motorcycles and mopeds can participate freely in the registration transfer scheme.
What is a registration number and who has entitlement to it?
A registration number is a unique identifier for a vehicle - primarily for taxation and law enforcement purposes.
It is assigned to the vehicle, rather than its keeper, and unless it is transferred or retained the registration number normally remains with the vehicle until it is broken up, destroyed or sent permanently out of the country.
Registration numbers are not items of property in their own right.
They are assigned, and may be withdrawn, by the Secretary of State as part of the basic registration and licensing process, which is required by law.
An individual can acquire the entitlement to a registration number when he or she becomes the registered keeper of the vehicle which carries the number, or by purchasing a registration through CMUK.
Whichever method of acquisition is used, when the vehicle changes hands, entitlement to its registration number will automatically pass with the vehicle to the new keeper UNLESS use is made of the special facilities which have been designed to allow motorists to acquire and retain particular registration numbers: namely, the Cherished Transfer, Retention and Sale of Marks schemes.
